AI Readiness Score: 10 Questions to Know If Your Business Is Ready for Automation
A business is ready for AI automation when the workflow is repeatable, measurable, valuable, accessible to the right systems, and safe enough to automate with clear human controls.
A business is ready for AI automation when it can clearly describe the workflow, measure the current baseline, access the required data and systems, define acceptable risk, name a human owner, and explain what should happen when the automation is uncertain or fails. Readiness is less about having the newest model and more about having a process worth automating.
If the process is undefined, the automation project is still a process-design project.
The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is useful context because it treats AI risk management as an organizational discipline involving governance, mapping, measurement, and management — not only a model-selection problem.
Score each question from 0 to 2
Use 0 for no, 1 for partly, and 2 for yes. The maximum score is 20. The number is only a prioritization tool; the explanation behind each answer is more valuable than the total.
1. Is the workflow repeatable?
If the task follows a recognizable pattern most of the time, it is easier to automate. If every case is unique and depends on expert judgment, start by automating the surrounding coordination rather than the judgment itself.
2. Is the problem expensive enough to matter?
Measure hours, delay, missed leads, rework, error, customer friction, or another business consequence. A workflow can be automatable and still not be worth automating.
3. Can you describe the current process end to end?
You should know the trigger, steps, systems, people, decisions, handoffs, failure modes, and final outcome. Hidden manual work is where many automation projects break.
4. Is the required data available and usable?
AI cannot reliably compensate for missing identifiers, inaccessible systems, inconsistent fields, or data that nobody is allowed to use.
5. Can the systems be integrated?
Check APIs, webhooks, exports, authentication, permissions, rate limits, and vendor constraints. Integration feasibility can change the entire project scope.
6. Is there a clear human owner?

7. Can you define what the AI must never do?
Good guardrails are specific: do not issue refunds above X, do not send without approval, do not provide legal or medical judgment, do not change a record if identity is uncertain, and so on.
8. Is there a human escalation path?
The system should know when it is uncertain, when a case is high stakes, and who receives the handoff with enough context to act.
9. Can you measure success after launch?
Choose a baseline and a post-launch metric: response time, handling time, error rate, booking rate, throughput, backlog, or another operating measure.
10. Can the team absorb the change?
Automation changes roles, handoffs, expectations, and sometimes incentives. A technically correct system can still fail if nobody understands or trusts the new workflow.
How to interpret the score
- 16–20: strong candidate for scoped automation, subject to technical validation.
- 11–15: promising, but resolve the lowest-scoring constraints first.
- 6–10: improve process, data, ownership, or controls before a major build.
- 0–5: start with process mapping and operating design rather than AI implementation.

The short answer
AI readiness is the intersection of business value, process clarity, technical access, risk control, ownership, and measurement. The best first project is not the flashiest use case; it is the workflow with enough value to matter and enough structure to manage.
